Controlling the uncontrollable: Part I

We frequently have higher call volume when the market is going down.  This isn’t surprising as retirement investors tend to ignore their investments while things are good and panic when they are doing poorly.  There are six main categories that will determine your retirement savings success:  1)  Savings, 2)  Asset Allocation, 3) Earnings, 4) Longevity, 5) Tax Policy, and 6) Market Returns.

Of the six, you only have some control over four of these five items.  Unfortunately people spend 90% of their time and energy worrying about those items that are out of their control.  In this short series of posts regarding your 401k, 403b or 457b plan, we will cover the different aspects of retirement success.
